Time flow of the da Vinci prostactectomy at the Vizenz Hospital in Hanover

One of the major advantages of the da Vinci surgical system is the fast recovery after the operation. The following 5 points provide a rough schedule of our procedure.

1.) Appointment-making and consulting hours:

An appointment for the da Vinci consulting hours is made by your urologist/GP (pre-hospitalisation appointment). During the consulting hours, we take the time to discuss all questions regarding your findings, therapy options and possible alternatives. If you are eligble for a da Vinci prostatectomy, you will be given a hospital appointment for an operation at short notice (most of the time, within a week after the consultation appointment).

For foreign patients, there are two ways of preparing for the operation:

  1. All questions are clarified and preparations for the operation are made within the framework of an outpatient consultation. The patient first goes back home and the operation is carried out in the interval (for instance 2-3 weeks later).
  2. All questions are clarified and preparations for the operation are made within the framework of an outpatient consultation. The operation is planned 3 to 5 days later. This interval is necessary while waiting for findings (blood, urine, etc.) and to carry out further examinations if necessary (e.g. computer tomography). For these days, we can arrange accommodation in a nearby hotel.

2.) Admission to the hospital:

One day before the planned operation, you will be admitted to the relevant ward (9 or 10 on the 5th floor) at around 2:00 pm.

3.) Operation:

The operation will be carried out on the following day. If desired, your family members will be informed about the developments right after the operation. Atfer a brief period in the waking room, you will then be transferred to the urological department. In very rare cases, e.g. in patients with severe pre-existing conditions, a night in the Intensive Care Unit may be necessary.

4.) Further course following the operation:

Already on the first day after the operation, you are able to move around for approx. 4 hours. With the exception of the bladder cathether, any existing drainage may be removed. On the 3rd day after the operation, you may already be discharged with inserted catheter and leg bags (depending on the patient´s wish).
The bladder catheter is removed on the 5th to 7th day following the operation on an outpatient basis. Before this, a leak test of the bladder urinary tract suture must be carried out.
